2014 Fitness Trends

Saw this article about the top fitness trends for 2014.

1) High intensity interval training (i.e. P90x or CrossFit)

2) Body Weight Training (think situps, pushups, planks)

I feel like these so-called trends are already here.  We all known someone doing CrossFit, right?  I feel like half the office here at the radio station is doing it.  Ok, it’s one lady.  And I’ve been going to bootcamp classes… which is almost exclusively body weight training stuff.

I have another friend who is doing a PLANKING CHALLENGE.  Those words should never be used together in a sentence.  The details actually don’t sound too bad.  But that’s how they get you with these fancy exercise trends…they make them sound not nearly as bad as they are.  That’s what I like about bootcamp — bootcamp sounds awful and it is awful.  Everyone knows what they’re getting into.

Anyhow the planking challenge details…

The 30 Day Plank Challenge will send your core strength through the roof! Yes, all you have to do is HOLD this position, nothing else! It looks pretty easy, but it isn’t! You want the same form as shown in the picture – you don’t want your bottom up in the air, and tighten your abdominal muscles. You can start with once a day, but do a few reps if you can

Day 1 – 20 seconds
Day 2 – 20 seconds
Day 3 – 30 seconds
Day 4 – 30 seconds
Day 5 – 40 seconds
Day 6 – REST
Day 7 – 45 seconds
Day 8 – 45 seconds
Day 9 – 60 seconds
Day 10 – 60 seconds
Day 11 – 60 seconds
Day 12 – 90 seconds
Day 13 – REST
Day 14 – 90 seconds
Day 15 – 90 seconds
Day 16 – 120 seconds

    And I’m doing none of it…. :) Kidding! I did try to plank here (well, my best attempt), and the day 1 time was no problem at all. I couldn’t do that a year ago! It was really good especially since I had broken one of my toes a while back. (My dog dropped his biggest Nylabone on my foot)

    I have a philosophy… don’t know if there’s anything to it or if I’m just a “wimp.” I believe in being active, having fun, and being as healthy as possible. I’m not into torturing my body just for it to be a certain way though. I tend to see P90x, Crossfit, etc as being very hard on the body.
